(Revised edition, translated by Robert W. Thomson)
The “Teaching of Saint Gregory” is part of the history of Agatangelos, which describes the conversion of King Trdat at the beginning of the fourth century and the work of St. Gregory the Illuminator. Although the “Teaching” is presented as a sermon to the Armenian court giving the essential content of the Christian gospel, in its present form it is a literary composition of the fifth century. The History of Agatangelos has come down in several versions, and the “Teaching” also has a complicated background. Its great importance is that it was recognized in later generations as the core of Armenian Christian teaching, and served as an authoritative text against which correct belief could be measured.
This is a completely revised and updated English rendering, with commentary taking into account recent advances in Armenian studies, which makes this fundamental text available for a wide readership.
