CATHOLICOSATE LIBRARIAN GIVES PRESENTATION ON HOLY SEE’S MANUSCRIPTS AND ANCIENT BOOKS
In the presence of His Holiness Catholicos Aram I, Archbishop Shahan Sarkissian, Director of the Library, Manuscripts and Ancient Books Department of the Catholicosate, gave a presentation on the history of manuscripts and the evolution of printing to the Brotherhood on Thursday, December 17.
In his talk, Archbishop Shahan discussed how the department was established and organized at Antelias. His Eminence also discussed the difficulties with which part of the manuscripts was transferred from Sis to Antelias in the wake of the Genocide and how their numbers were increased in the following years, as well as those of ancient books.
In his closing remarks, the Catholicos said that books—whether they be manuscripts, ancient prints or not—are an important component of the intellectual and spiritual legacy of the Great House of Cilicia, not only by virtue of their age but also their content and message. He added that the Holy See not only was the custodian of the Armenian people’s cultural heritage but it was also called on enriching it and to improve our individual and collective life.
I was excited to hear the story of Srpazan Shahan’s presentation on the ancient manuscripts, the history of their journey and riches they harbor.
I would enjoy listening to his presentation if it is recorded. If not suggest the topic as a great one for presentation via one of the tele platforms for a community lecture. Again thank you for sharing, Ara A. Chalian
