Armenian Feasts

NEW SUNDAY

This Sunday, April 7, is New Sunday (Nor Giragi). Easter Sunday is followed by a period of fifty days (Hinoonk) from the Resurrection to Pentecost (Hokekaloosd) dedicated to the glorification of the Resurrection. Each of the seven Sundays of Hinoonk has a special name. This Sunday is also called Second Easter (Grgnazadig), which literally means “Easter repeated,” because it is the eighth day of Easter and a day similar to Easter in readings and hymns.

This year, New Sunday coincides with the feast of the Annunciation, when Archangel Gabriel foretold the birth of Jesus from the Holy Spirit to the Virgin Mary (Lk 1.26-38). By following this feast we celebrate the Epiphany on January 6.
