Some words have a ring of eternity to them, and the Declaration of Independence has long earned its rightful place among the most beautifully penned historical documents. Yet beyond that, and the Founding Fathers’ genius behind it—so eloquently expressed by Thomas Jefferson and John Adams—its transcendence lies in the enduring power of the promise of a more equal, fair society, that the Declaration envisioned, and that Americans have been fulfilling since 1776. Some nations may be forgiven for taking some freedoms and rights for granted, yet as world history has been teaching us forever, we shall always remain vigilant of the values that we cherish, for, in large measure, living is resisting.
