Letters from Armenia

SONA – 11/23/2023

The Prelacy’s Orphan Sponsorship program, established in 1993, remains the centerpiece of the Prelacy’s mission in Armenia and Artsakh. We are pleased to share some of the letters that children regularly address to their sponsors.

This letter is from Sona,* who is sponsored by Vahe and Hasmik Dombalagian.

* We use only the first names of the children to protect their privacy.

Dear Sponsor,

This is Sona, from the village of Davidbek, in the region of Syunik, where I live with my small family: my mom and 2 brothers. My older brother is disabled since birth; he is already 19 years old. My mom doesn’t work; she is my brother’s caretaker. My younger brother helps my mom –he goes to school and works too. I am already in 5th grade in school and am 9 years old. On November 26, I will be 10 years old.

I am a very good student in school, and my favorite subject is English. I want to become a teacher. But my mom wants me to become a doctor to treat and help people with cancer, because my father died of cancer. I miss him a lot. I will continue doing well in school to achieve my goals.

Dear Sponsor, our village is considered a border village and the enemy is very close to us. However, our villagers don’t abandon their lands and they always defend it from the enemy. It’s already very cold here, mostly cloudy and rainy. To heat the house, we use a woodstove. My family and I are very grateful to you for your assistance. My mother always prays for the health and peace of you and your family. I would like very much to meet you personally, to hug and thank you.
