PROF. PAPAZIAN DISCUSSES ANCIENT HERESIES AND THEIR MODERN ECHOES AT PRELACY’S FIFTH LENTEN LECTURE

At the fifth session of the Prelacy Lenten Program on Wednesday, April 2, Prof. Michael Papazian explored how ancient Christian heresies—including Arianism—continue to resurface disguised in different forms. The lecture took place at St. Illuminator’s Cathedral in New York City and was presided over by His Eminence Archbishop Anoushavan, Prelate.
Following the Husgoom Service, Dr. Papazian, a professor of philosophy at Berry College in Rome, Georgia, presented a lecture titled “The Creed Today and Our Modern Heresies.” He briefly discussed how early creeds emerged in response to theological controversies and how ancient heretical teachings do not die; they reincarnate in different forms. He then highlighted three modern examples of Arianism—the heretical teaching that the Council of Nicaea repudiated by formulating and ratifying the Nicene Creed in 325.
