The prayers in this book are from the Book of Hours (Zhamakirk) of the Armenian Church, the book that contains the daily cycle of public worship services. These services include fixed Psalms and scriptural readings, hymns and canticles, diaconal litanies, proclamations and prayers, and various rituals.
The translator, Archdeacon Shant Kazanjian, writes in his preface:
“These prayers are recited by a priest when the faithful gather officially for worship, the priest standing as the head of a local church liturgically. But this is not to say that the faithful cannot or should not use them as their own personal prayers. These prayers belong to every single member of the Church. As such, we should incorporate them in our personal prayer life, praying one or two or more of these prayers daily, depending upon the time of day—dawn, morning, midmorning, noon, afternoon, evening, night or just before going to bed.”
