The memoirs of Hovhannes Mugrditchian (1888-1974) “are in a very real sense a love story, Not a story of one individual’s love for another, but of a patriot’s lifetime devotion to his people,” writes his son Paul (Mugrditchian) Martin in the preface.
His resolute will to survive and his devotion carried him and his young wife through the horrors of the Armenian Genocide. It did not diminish when the Kemalist attacks on Cilicia forced the couple’s escape to America. His devotion compelled them to repatriate to Soviet Armenia after World War II so that he could help rebuild his homeland. He would return to the United States in 1963. He left memoirs written in Armenian, which have been translated and shaped into a narrative journal of a remarkable life.
