ԱՐՔԵՊԻՍԿՈՊՈՍՈՒԹԵԱՆ ԱՍՏԻՃԱՆ
Կիրակի, 2 Դեկտեմբերին եղանակը մշուշոտ, անձրեւոտ ու ցուրտ էր, բայց Քուինզի (Նիւ Եորք) Terrace on the Park սրահին մէջ տիրող մթնոլորտը՝ արեւով, լոյսով ու ելեկտրականութեամբ ողողուած։
Աւելի քան 375 հոգի կը մասնակցէր Արեւելեան թեմի առաջնորդ Անուշաւան արք. Դանիէլեանի ընտրութեան նուիրուած ու շատ սպասուած այս ձեռնարկին, որուն տոմսակները սպառած էին շաբաթներէ ի վեր։ Ներկաները եկած էին ԱՄՆ արեւելեան ափի տարբեր նահանգներէ, ինչպէս եւ Շիքակոյէն, Տիթրոյիթէն, Գանատայէն, Գալիֆորնիայէն, Ֆրանսայէն ու Լիբանանէն։
Սիրուած առաջնորդը, որ նոյն օրերուն արքեպիսկոպոսական աստիճանի արժանացած էր Մեծի Տանն Կիլիկիոյ Կաթողիկոս Ն.Ս.Օ.Տ.Տ. Արամ Ա.ի կոնդակով, , այդ առաւօտ Ս. Պատարագ մատուցած էր Ս. Լուսաւորիչ Մայր Եկեղեցւոյ մէջ՝ հաւատացեալներու հոծ բազմութեան մը ներկայութեամբ։ Ս. Պատարագի ընթացքին, Գերպ. Տ. Սահակ Ծ. վրդ. Եմիշեան կատարած էր սրբատառ կոնդակին ընթերցումը։
Ճոխ ընդունելութենէ մը ետք, որ հարստացած էր ջութակահար Արսէն Կէտիկեանի երաժշտութեամբ, ներկաները շքեղ սրահը մտան, ուր սեղանները զարդարուած էին Առաջնորդ Սրբազան Հօր եկեղեցական աստիճանը խորհրդանշող ճերմակ ու մանիշակագոյն ծաղիկներով։
Սրբազան Հօր բացման աղօթքէն ետք, Ազգային Վարչութեան քարտուղարուհի եւ ճաշկերոյթի յանձնախումբի ատենապետուհի՝ Սիւզըն Չիթճեան-Էրիքսըն, բարի գալուստ մաղթեց ներկաներուն եւ մեծարեալ Սրբազան Հօր ուղղուած կենաց մը առաջադրեց։
Ազգային Վարչութեան փոխատենապետուհի եւ օրուան հանդիսավարուհի՝ Քարէն Ճիհանեան, ներկայացուց բազմաթիւ պատուոյ հիւրերը, որոնց շարքին՝ Ռոբերտ Աւետիսեան՝ Արցախի ներկայացուցիչը Ուաշինկթընի մէջ, Հոգշ. Տ. Մեսրոպ վրդ. Պարսմեան՝ Արեւելեան թեմի (էջմիածնական) առաջնորդ Հոգշ. Տ. Դանիէլ վրդ. Ֆնտըգեանի ներկայացուցիչը, Արեւելեան թեմիս ծառայող հոգեւորականները, ինչպէս եւ ներկայ ու նախկին անդամները Առաջնորդարանի Ազգ. Վարչութեան եւ Կրօնական Ժողովի։ Նաեւ յիշուեցան Առաջնորդարանի անձնակազմի ներկայ անդամները։ Հայաստանի Հանրապետութեան մշտական ներկայացուցիչը ՄԱԿի մէջ՝ Մհեր Մարգարեան, ներկայ գտնուած էր Ս. Լուսաւորիչ Մայր Եկեղեցւոյ պատարագին։
ՅԱՏԿԱՊԷՍ ՏՊԱՒՈՐԻՉ
Յատկապէս տպաւորիչ իրողութիւն մըն էր, որ այս ձեռնարկը գլխաւոր սեղան չունէր։ Հետեւելով առաջնորդի ցուցմունքին, ներկայ աւելի քան տասնեակ մը հոգեւորականները ցրուած էին ժողովուրդին մէջ, խորհրդանշելով Սրբազան Հօր անմիջականութիւնը հօտի իւրաքանչիւր անհատին հետ։
Ստացուած էին բազմաթիւ շնորհաւորական նամակներ, որոնց շարքին՝ Անուշաւան Սրբազան Հօր Դպրեվանքի ուսուցիչ եւ Ամերիկայի Արեւմտեան թեմի նախկին առաջնորդ՝ Եփրեմ արք. Թապագեանի հետեւեալ ուղերձը.
«Այսու գրով կը շնորհաւորենք ձեր առաջնորդական պաշտօնն ու Նորին Սուրբ Օծութիւն Տէր Տէր Արամ Ա․ Կաթողիկոսի կողմէ Արքեպիսկոպոսի տիտղոսի շնորհումը։
Ձեզ ճանչցած ենք ի տղայ տիոց Դպրեվանքի ուսանողութեան օրերէն որպէս տիպար աշակերտ, եւ ապա միաբան՝ Մեծի Տանն Կիլիկիոյ Կաթողիկոսութեան։
Ձեր անձնուրաց սէրն ու հեզահամբոյր խոնարհ բնաւորութիւնը ծանօթ է ամէնքին։ Նաեւ, որպէս հմուտ բանասէր եւ գիտաշխատող ձեր վաստակը բարձրօրէն գնահատուած է ակադեմական շրջանակներու մէջ։
Թող Ամենաբարին Աստուած պարգեւէ ձեզի քաջառողջ կեանք եւ բազմաբեղուն գործունէութիւն Տիրոջ անդաստանէն ներս»։
Արեւելեան թեմի (էջմիածնական) նորընտիր առաջնորդ Հոգշ. Տ. Դանիէլ վրդ. Ֆնտըքեանի ներշնչող ուղերձը, վերջինիս ի բացակայութեան՝ կարդաց անոր ներկայացուցիչ Հոգշ. Տ. Մեսրոպ վրդ. Պարսամեանը։
Անուշաւան Սրբազանը «հոգեւոր եղբայր մը եւ երկարամեայ բարեկամ» կոչելով, Հ. Դանիէլ իր յարգանքն ու հիացումը յայտնեց նորընտիր առաջնորդի վաստակած բազմաթիւ պատիւներուն ու իրագործումներուն նկատմամբ, աւելցնելով. «Հայաստանեայց Եկեղեցւոյ քրիստոնէական առաքելութեան հանդէպ ձեր նուիրումը բացայայտ կը դառնայ այն անձնական պարկեշտութեամբ ու համեստութեամբ, որոնք ձեր հոգեւոր ծառայութեան մշտական ուղեկիցն են»։
Վկայակոչելով Արեւելեան զոյգ թեմերու առաջնորդական ընտրութիւնները, Հ. Դանիէլ Ֆնտըքեան ըսաւ, թէ «կը զգար Աստուծոյ ձեռքը» միաժամանակ տեղի ունեցող այս իրադարձութիւններուն ետին։
«Կ՚աղօթեմ, որ ասիկա նշանակէ` թէ Աստուածային Բժիշկը պատրաստ է.- մեր եկեղեցւոյ մարմինը բուժելու, երկու թոքերով ազատօրէն շնչելու անոր կարողութիւնը վերականգնելու, նոր արշալոյսի մը խոստումով յառաջ երթալու նշանը տալու, նոր օրուան մը աւետիսը յղելու, որպէսզի կարելի ըլլայ մեր ամբողջ ժողովուրդը վերակենդանացնել Սուրբ Հոգիի միացնող շնորհքով», աւելցուց Հ. Դանիէլը իր ուղերձին մէջ։ Այս մարգարէաշունչ արտայայտութիւնները բուռն ծափահարութեան արժանացան։
Հ. Յ. Դաշնակցութեան, Հ.Օ.Մ.ի, Համազգայինի, Հ.Մ.Ը.Մ.ի եւ Հ.Ե.Դ.ի անունով խօսք առաւ տոքթ. Արա Չալեան, որ անդրադարձաւ «երիտասարդ Հայր Անուշաւանի, ժողովուրդի հովիւ»ի այն յատկութիւններուն, որոնք տարիներու ընթացքին զինք սիրցուցած են ու իր անձը ներշնչումի աղբիւր դարձուցած՝ յաչս ժողովուրդին, եւ դիտել տուաւ, որ Սրբազան Հայրը, Ներսէս Շնորհալիի նման, «ներհայեցողական ուղեւորութեան մը դիմած է.։ ո՞ւր ենք այսօր եւ ո՞ւր պիտի երթանք այսուհետեւ», հարց տուաւ բանախօսը։
«Մեր եկեղեցին, մեր կազմակերպութիւնները եւ մեր ընտանիքները առանձին-առանձին պիտի չգոյատեւեն։ Ասիկա մեր բոլորի՛ն պատասխանատուութիւնն է», ըսաւ ան, յատուկ շեշտադրումով։
«ՁԵՐ ՄԷՋՔԵՐԸ ԱՄՐԱՑՈՒՑԷ՛Ք»
Խորհրդանշական պատկերներով լեցուն ուղերձով, Կրօնական Ժողովի ատենապետ Արժ. Տ. Ներսէս քհնյ. Մանուկեան յայտնեց, թէ Անուշաւան արք. Դանիէլեան՝ «մեր հինգերորդ առաջնորդը, մեր չորս նախորդ առաջնորդներուն գործը պիտի շարունակէ՝ մեր եկեղեցիներն ու համայնքները յաջողութեամբ պահպանելու»։
Աւելի քան կէս դարու ծանօթութիւն ունենալով Սրբազան Հօր հետ, Տէր Հայրը վստահութեամբ հաստատեց, որ մեծարեալը միայն մէկ ուղղութիւն ունի՝ դէպի առաջ. «Ո՛չ մէկ դժուարութիւն կրնայ զինք դանդաղեցնել, ո՛չ մէկ արգելք կրնայ իր ընթացքը խոչընդոտել։ Ան միշտ կեդրոնացած ու վճռակամ է՝ յարատեւելու։ Ուրեմն, ամրացուցէ՛ք ձեր գօտիները։ Այս վարորդը ձեր սովորական վարորդը չէ»։
«Իսկ այս առաջնորդին համար, միայն մէկ ժամանակի հասկացողութիւն կայ՝ հիմա», շարունակեց Տ. Ներսէս։ «Կէս գիշեր թէ առաւօտ կանուխ, լաւ գաղափարները պէտք է անմիջապէս մարմին ստանան։ Իսկ որպէս եկեղեցւոյ իշխան, ան միշտ ինքզինք կը ներկայացնէ իբրեւ այն իտէալական ծառան, որ ըստ Աւետարաններու նկարագրութեամբ, «մէջքը ամրացուց»՝ երթալու պատրաստ։ Ուրեմն՝ ձեր մէջքերը ամրացուցէ՛ք, եթէ կ՚ուզէք քայլ պահել անոր հետ», յանձնարարեց ներկաներուն։ «Ջանասիրութիւնն ու նուիրումը անոր եղբայրներն են, իսկ համեստութիւնը՝ անոր քոյրը», ըսաւ Տ. Ներսէս քհնյ. ծափահարութիւններու տարափի մը ընդմէջէն։
Ազգ. Վարչութեան ատենապետը՝ փաստաբան Ճէք Մարտոյեան, վեր առաւ Առաջնորդարանի մէջ տիրող «նոր ոգի»ն, թէեւ աշխատանքը նոյնը կը մնայ։ «Ուրախութիւն մը կը տեսնեմ զոր կարելի չէ ընդօրինակել, սէր մը՝ զոր Սրբազանը ցոյց կու տայ թեմի բոլոր համայնքներուն հանդէպ, ոգեղինութիւն մը եւ առաքելութիւն մը բոլորիս համար՝ միասնաբար յառաջ երթալու»։
Ատենապետը ընդգծեց Անուշաւան Սրբազան Հօր ընտրութեան կարեւորութիւնը, նշելով, թէ «մեր Առաջնորդարանի աշխատանքն ու առաքելութիւնը հետեւողականօրէն կը շարունակեն այն ինչ որ Առաջնորդարանը միշտ ջանացած է իրագործել. միասին աշխատիլ բոլորին համար, մշտապէս նայիլ Ս. Խաչին եւ վերանորոգուիլ զոհողութեան եւ յարութեան յոյսի անսակարկ ոգիով, մշտապէս անանցողիկ արժէքներով ներշնչուիլ, եւ մշտապէս յառաջ շարժիլ դէպի նպատակը՝ առանց տկարանալու»։
Պրն. Մարտոյեանը աւարտեց իր խօսքերը շնորհակալութիւն յայտնելով ներկաներուն․ «Շնորհակալութիւն ձեզմէ իւրաքանչիւրին՝ այսօր մեզի հետ ըլլալուն եւ ցոյց տալուն ձեր որդիական սէրն ու զօրակցութիւնը Անուշաւան Սրբազան Հօր հանդէպ, երբ ան կը սկսի իր պաշտօնավարութիւնը իբրեւ մեր Առաջնորդը»։
Սեդա Պալմանուկեան արտասանեց յատկապէս այս առիթով իր հեղինակած բանաստեղծութիւնը, որ վեր կը հանէր Սրբազան Հօր բազմաթիւ ձիրքերն ու շնորհները եւ որ արժանացաւ բուռն ծափահարութիւններու։
Գեղարուեստական բաժնին մէջ, յայտնի մեներգիչներ՝ Վաղարշակ Օհանեան եւ Անահիտ Զաքարեան հմայեցին ներկաները, ի մասնաւորի Եղիշէ արք. Դուրեանի խօսքերով գրուած «Եթէ զիս տանիս» երգով։ Ջութակահարուհի Սվետլանա Մկրտչեանի յայտագիրը ճոխացուց իր երաժշտական ձիրքերով։
ՍԻՐՈՅ ԿՐԱԿ
Յուզիչ ու սրտաբուխ իր փակման պատգամով, Անուշաւան արք. Դանիէլեան՝ «Սէրը՝ գործով յայտնուած» բնաբանին շուրջ իր կեդրոնացումը խորհրդանշելով, յայտնեց. «Ուր սէր կայ, դրախտի յայտնաբերումը կ՚ըլլայ։ Նոր բան մը չենք սկսիր։ Նորը՝ մեր մօտեցումն է, մեր հասկացողութիւնը»։
«Առաքելութեանս պիտի մօտենամ հաւատքով ու աղօթքներով, իմ նախորդներուս յաջող գործին նոր ուժականութիւն տալով», շեշտեց առաջնորդը։
«Կ՚ուզեմ սիրոյ կրակը բերել մեր առօրեայ կեանքին եւ յատկապէս կեդրոնանալ երիտասարդութեան վրայ, աշխատիլ մեր ժողովուրդի առողջ մտքի ու մարմնի պահպանման ի խնդիր, եւ վերագտնել մեր ինքնութիւնը իբրեւ ամերիկացիներ, հայեր ու քրիստոնեաներ», յայտարարեց Սրբազան Հայրը, երկարատեւ ծափահարութիւններու արժանանալով։ «Կիլիկիա»յի հաւաքական երգեցողութիւնը պատշաճ եզրափակումն էր տօնական մթնոլորտի մէջ ընթացած այս ձեռնարկին։
Արցախի ներկայացուցիչ՝ Ռոբերտ Աւետիսեան հաստատեց՝ թէ «հայ ժողովուրդի համար այս ճակատագրական ժամանակաշրջանին, օրհնուած ենք Սրբազանին նման անձ մը ունենալով, որ ջանք չի խնայեր Հայաստանը, Արցախը, մեր համայնքը եւ մեր եկեղեցին հզօր եւ հպարտ դարձնելու»։
«Սրահը լեցուն էր սիրով ու յարգանքով Սրբազանին հանդէպ», ըսաւ համայնքի ծանօթ դէմքերէն Յակոբ Գույումճեան։ «Առաջնորդական նոր ընտրութիւնը կարեւոր իրադարձութիւն մըն է մեր համայնքին համար»։ Իսկ Քարէն Պետրոսեան-Ռիչարտսըն «երկու մեղմաբարոյ» եկեղեցական ղեկավարներու նորագոյն ընտրութիւնը կոչեց «հնարաւոր գործակցութեան եւ միասնականութեան պատմական առիթ մը»։
“PEOPLE’S PRELATE” HONORED AT GALA BANQUET IN NEW YORK;
PRELATE ELEVATED TO RANK OF ARCHBISHOP

NEW YORK, NY—–The weather outside on Sunday, December 2 was foggy, rainy, and cold, but the atmosphere and spirit inside the Terrace on the Park ballroom was full of light, sun, and energy.
More than 375 admirers of the new Prelate of the Eastern Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church of America, Archbishop Anoushavan Tanielian, were in attendance at this long-awaited event which had been sold out for several weeks. The attendees had come from several East Coast states as well as from Chicago, Detroit, California, Canada, Paris, and Lebanon.
The beloved Prelate, elevated from Bishop to Archbishop with an encyclical by His Holiness Catholicos Aram I of the Great House of Cilicia, had celebrated the Divine Liturgy at St.Illuminator’s Cathedral in New York that morning to a large assemblage of the Faithful. During the Divine Liturgy, Very Rev. Fr. Sahag Yemishian read the Encyclical issued by His Holiness that elevated the Prelate to the rank of Archbishop.
At the banquet hall, following a sumptuous reception, and the beautiful background music of violinist Arsen Kedikian, the attendees filed into an elegant ballroom decorated with white and lilac flowers gracing the tables, the colors symbolizing the clerical rank of the Prelate.
Archbishop Anoushavan offered the invocation, after which Susan Chitjian Erickson, Secretary of the Executive Council and Chair of the Banquet Committee, warmly welcomed the guests and led a celebratory toast to the honoree.
Karen Jehanian, Vice Chair of the Prelacy’s Executive Council, in her role as MC for the evening introduced some attendees, including Robert Avetisyan, Representative of Nagorno Karabagh in Washington, DC; Very Rev. Fr. Mesrop Parsamyan, representing Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan, Primate of the Eastern Diocese; Clergy serving the Eastern Prelacy who were present, as well as current and past members of the Prelacy’s Religious and Executive Councils. Also recognized were the members of the Prelacy staff in attendance. His Excellency Mher Margaryan, Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, attended the Divine Liturgy at St. Illuminator’s Cathedral.
A message from Archbishop Yeprem Tabakian, former Prelate of the Western Prelacy and an instructor at the Theological Seminary when Anoushavan Srpazan was a student: “I would like to congratulate your election as the Prelate of the Eastern United States and elevation to the rank of Archbishop. I have known you since your days as a student at the Seminary in Antelias. You were a role model student, and later a selfless member of our Cilician Brotherhood. Your sacrificial love and care, as well as your humbleness are well known by all. As a skillful philologist and scholar, your works are highly praised in academic circles. May God grant you good health and long life and fruitful ministry in the vineyard of the Lord.”
ESPECIALLY IMPRESSIVE
What was especially impressive about this event was the absence of a head table. The more than a dozen priests present each sat at separate tables with the people, a directive of the Prelate, symbolizing his closeness to the people.
The Very Rev. Fr. Mesrop Parsamyan, representing the Eastern Diocesan Primate, the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan who was traveling out of state, read the Primate’s inspiring message.
Calling Srpazan “a fellow churchman and longtime friend, the Diocesan Primate expressed his respect and admiration for the many honors and achievements of the Prelate. “Your devotion to the Christian mission of the Armenian Church is plainly evident in the personal integrity and humility which are the abiding characteristics of your ministry.”
Recounting the recent elections of both the Eastern Primate and Eastern Prelate, Fr. Daniel Findikyan said he “sensed the hand of God” behind these simultaneous developments.
“I pray that it signals that the Divine Physician is ready to heal the body of our church, restore its ability to breathe freely with both lungs, beckoning us forward with the promise of a new sunrise, heralding a new day, so that our entire people may be revived by the unifying grace of the Holy Spirit,” the Primate’s message said. This prophetic message received a huge ovation.
Dr. Ara Chalian, speaking on behalf of the ARF, ARS, Hamazkayin, Homenetmen and AYF, recounted the endearing and inspiring qualities of “young Anoushavan, the people’s hoviv” who like Nerses Shnorhali “went on a journey of introspection. Where are we today, and where will we go,” he asked. “Our church, our organizations and our families will not survive on their own. It is our collective responsibility,” he said with special emphasis.
GIRD UP YOUR LOINS
In a message replete with symbolic images, Chairman of the Religious Council, Archpriest Fr. Nerses Manoogian, stated that Srpazan Anoushavan, “our fifth Prelate will follow the suit of our four previous Prelates in successfully keeping our churches and communities afloat.”
Having known Srpazan for more than half a century, Der Nerses stated with confidence that there is only one direction for the honoree, and that is FORWARD. “No difficulty can slow him down, no obstruction can hamper his course. He is always focused and determined to carry on. So fasten your seat belts. This driver is not your average driver.”
“And for this Prelate, there is only one timeline – NOW,” Der Nerses continued. “Whether it is midnight or early dawn, the good ideas should be incarnated right away. And as the prince of the church, he always presents himself like the ideal servant portrayed in the Gospels who ‘girded up his loins’ and was ready to go. So gird up your loins if you want to keep pace with him,” he instructed the audience. “Diligence and devotion are his brothers and humility is his sister, said Der Nerses to thunderous applause.
Chairman of the Executive Council Jack Mardoian, Esq., paid tribute to the “new spirit” in the Prelacy even though the work is the same. “I see a joy that cannot be replicated, a love that Srpazan shows for all Prelacy communities, a spirituality and a mission for all of us to go forward together.”
Chairman Mardoian extolled the election of Anoushavan Srpazan noting that “the work and mission of our Prelacy are consistent with those which our Prelacy has always tried to achieve: to work with each other for each other; to look always to the Holy Cross and to be renewed by the nonnegotiable spirit of sacrifice and hope of resurrection; to be inspired always by intransient values; and to move always forward towards the goal without becoming weak.”
Mr. Mardoian concluded his comments with thanks to “each of you for being with us today and for showing your filial love and support of Anoushavan Srpazan as he begins this tenure of service as our Prelate.”
In a passionately recited poem which she especially created for this occasion, Seta Balmanoukian who is often called on in the community to share her special talent praised the many attributes of Srpazan to a loud ovation.
And to the delight of the audience, well known soloists Vagharshak Ohanyan and Anahit Zakaryan sang several songs, with Archbishop Yeghise Tourian’s “Yete Zis Danis” being a special favorite. Also sharing her musical talent was violinist Svetlana Mkrtchyan.
FIRE OF LOVE
In an emotionally delivered spontaneous message, Archbishop Anoushavan, symbolizing his work focus of “Love in Action,” stated “wherever there is love, there is paradise discovered. We are not starting anything new. What is new is our approach, our understanding.”
“I will approach my mission with a new dynamism of the successful work of my predecessors with faith and prayers,” declared the Prelate with emphasis.
“I want to bring the FIRE OF LOVE into our daily life, and especially focus on the youth, work for our people’s sustenance of a healthy mind and body, and rediscover our identity as Americans, Armenians and Christians,” he declared to a standing ovation lasting several minutes. The singing of Giligia by all present ended the joyous and celebratory occasion.
Artzagh Represesentative Robert Avetisyan, stated that “in this crucial period for the Armenian people, we are blessed to have someone like Srpazan who spares no effort to make Armenia, Artzagh, our community and our church strong and proud.”
“The room was full of love and respect for the Srpazan,” said long-time community activist Hagop Kouyoumdjian. “His new position as Prelate is an important event for our community.”
And Karen Bedrosian Richardson called the recent elections of “two mild-mannered” religious leaders an “historic opportunity for potential cooperation and unification.”
