SATELLITE IMAGERY CONFIRMS CULTURAL GENOCIDE BY AZERBAIJAN

For the first time, newly declassified satellite imagery from the 1970s has permitted to document the destruction of the Armenian cultural heritage by Azerbaijan in the exclave of Nakhichevan, a historical Armenian region under Azerbaijani control. In an article published in The Art Newspaper entitled “Special investigation: Declassified satellite images show erasure of Armenian churches,” Simon Maghakyan details the cultural genocide carried out by Azerbaijan, especially under the regime of dictator Ilham Aliyev, which ordered the destruction of more than 20,000 Armenian historical monuments in Nakhichevan, including the churches of  Surb Stepanos, Surb Tovma, Surb Kristapor, Mets Anapat Surb Astvatsatsin, Surb Hakob Hayrapet, and Surb Hovhannes Mkrtich.
