NEW MOMENTUM IN CATHOLICOSATE-VATICAN RELATIONS

The recent visit of His Holiness Catholicos Aram I to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV in the Vatican marked a turning point in relations between the two Holy Sees, reinforcing the historical links between the Great House of Cilicia and the Catholic Church and advancing the ecumenical agenda, with the Roman Pontiff recognizing the Catholicos’ contributions to the inter-church dialogue.  

“The visit underscored the importance of church diplomacy, something Catholicos Aram I has cultivated during his three-decade tenure, turning him into a key ecumenical leader,” said His Eminence Archbishop Anoushavan, Prelate. “At this time of fundamental geopolitical transformations, the renewed commitment to cooperation between the Catholicosate of Cilicia and the Holy See in Rome helps us address the new challenges facing the Armenian nation and Church.”  

The Cilicia Analytical Platform also recently discussed the official visit of His Holiness to the Vatican. His Eminence Archbishop Nareg, head of the Ecumenical and Interreligious Relations Department at the Catholicosate, briefed members on the visit and its discussions. 

During CAP’s online meeting, the visit was described as unprecedented in scope, including a high-level reception by the Vatican Protocol Department, a joint Catholicos–Pope public audience, the Pope’s recognition of Aram I’s contributions to ecumenical dialogue, and the official announcement that St. Nerses the Gracious would be included in the Catholic Church’s calendar of saints. 

The meeting reviewed key issues Catholicos Aram I raised with the Pope and Vatican officials, including: 

• Azerbaijan’s systematic destruction and erasure of Armenian cultural heritage in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) 

• The right of displaced indigenous Armenians of Artsakh to return to their ancestral homeland, as protected under international law 

• The immediate release of Armenian leaders and prisoners of war detained in Baku 

• The escalating challenges confronting the Middle East, particularly those affecting Christian communities 

• The humanitarian crisis facing the Lebanese people

His Holiness Aram I detailed the Vatican’s unique dual role as both Church and state, Azerbaijan’s efforts to influence the Vatican through various means, and the complexities of presenting Armenian concerns. The meeting emphasized the importance of this visit and the opportunity it provided to address Armenian and Lebanese issues with high-ranking Vatican officials.
