The present volume brings together select studies by the author published in disparate journals and volumes. Some deal exclusively with Armenian (ancient, medieval, and modern) or Iranian Studies (pre-Islamic). In the case of the latter, James Russell has been most interested in the sources and religious material of heroic epic and of folklore, material ancillary to the Christian religious culture. Several studies deal also with the visionaries of the Armenian tradition: Mesrop Mashtots, Gregory of Narek, and Yeghishe Charents.
