PATRIARCHAL APPEAL TO THE FAITHFUL OF THE PRELACIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST

We are following the war that has broken out in the Middle East with deep concern. Some experts consider it the start of the Third World War, while others see it as the beginning of a long chain of conflicts. Whatever the interpretation, the military actions launched by the United States and Israel against Iran are evidently becoming more complex and intensifying, engulfing the entire Middle East and showing signs of spreading beyond the region. Uncertainty is deepening, while the casualty toll keeps rising, physical destruction is expanding, and the number of refugees is growing.

Every country in the Middle East, to a greater or lesser degree, is exposed to the terrible consequences of war, which affect their security, physical safety, economy, and social as well as political life. Nevertheless, Iran and Lebanon continue to bear the brunt of the war’s immediate and grave consequences.

As is known, Armenians have communities in every country affected by the military operations. In the last few days, we were able to communicate with our Prelates as well as prelacy trustees and community leaders, receiving vital information from them and providing guidance. The safety of our communities is an absolute priority for all of us.

Indeed, it is a fact that our community members in every country in the region are model citizens, who fulfill their civic obligations, obey their countries’ laws, and always support their states, backing their rights and interests for the sake of justice and peace.

We express our profound condolences to the families of all victims and wish the injured a speedy recovery, as well as all refugees a safe return home.

We urge all warring parties to cease all military operations, respect the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security of all countries in accordance to international law, and to find solutions via political dialogue. The establishment of a comprehensive and permanent peace based on justice and mutual trust must become an absolute priority for the international community and the United Nations; otherwise, the region will find itself on the verge of new wars.

In the current circumstances, fraught with unpredictable risks, we urge our communities to stay vigilant and organized, rallying around our churches and community institutions, following the guidance provided by the governments of their countries, staying away from situations that may compromise their safety and being careful about organizing community gatherings. At the same time, we advise our community institutions to monitor closely the needs and difficulties faced by families, providing help whenever necessary.

This is what the fraught situation in the region requires now. We must follow developments closely to determine the necessary approaches and actions. As we consider that our communities live in different environments, alongside our shared concerns, it is necessary to pay special attention to each community’s unique concerns and develop responses accordingly.

The Catholicosate has put all its resources at the disposal of our communities. At the same time, if the need arises, our Prelacies, organizations, and benefactors in the Diaspora must be ready to come to the aid of our communities that are affected by the consequences of the war.

We pray to God Most High to extend his canopy of heavenly peace over the Middle East and strengthen mutual understanding between nations and keep the daughters and sons of our nation free from all danger.

With patriarchal blessings and warm fatherly love,

Prayerfully,
